Craig Anderson, The Wedge, NSW

Craig Anderson likes wedges. He likes waves that bounce off breakwalls and pulse into waves that’re twice as powerful as they look. At dark, cold water spots that look sharky, or, actually are sharky. Well, maybe he doesn’t like spots like that, but he sure gravitates towards them. Maybe it’s something to do with the fact that Craig comes from South Africa – but when he’s at home, in Newcastle on Australia’s east coast, you’ll likely find him at either Stockton (the sharkiest place in the region) or the spot pictured here, which is called the Wedge. On the other side of this breakwall is the harbour, where coal tankers are regularly dragged in by tugs. The wedge ain’t patrolled and certainly has a menacing feel to it. But, there is one way to make yourself feel better about being out there. Huck as high as y’can and get outta the water (see above). After being in Byron Bay for a stint, hanging out, partying, surfing and getting his board decorated by a local grom, Craig’d been home for two days when photog pal Jack Taylor captured this monster huck. The wedge only works when it’s too big everywhere else and this day, had some particularly good ramps. And according to Jack, Craig was going crazy out there. But y’can probably see that for yourself.
