Kelly Slater Joins Kona Brewing Campaign
Eco-Friendly efforts for the Tokyo Olympics
Do you consider Kelly Slater to be a “Big Wave Surfer”? Not saying he can’t hold his own on critical aquatic mountains, just a weird title to give the goat, vs. 11-time world champion, greatest competitive surfer of all time, etc.
This new title, of course, comes as a play on words with his new Kona Brewing partnership. Check out the details below:
Surf legend Kelly Slater joins Kona Brewing Company to continue the brewer’s largest ad campaign, “Dear Mainland.” The athlete appears in three TV ads centering the pairing of Kona’s beer with surfing and a day at the beach.
The short, sunny spots— titled “Surf Lesson,” “Board Meeting” and “Great Day”—show Slater by the ocean sharing beers with Kona’s beloved “Bruddahs,” two actors who embody the spirit of the brand, with playful banter and shared island wisdom. The term “big waves” plays a part throughout the ads, whether it refers to Kona’s beer of the same name or the actual ocean.
As a Florida boy that never got a whiff of a world title, I must say that I prefer drinking big waves over surfing them. Anything over six feet is scary, and anything after six beers is a mistake.
