Kolohe Andino is the great American hope for a world title and also an Olympian for the Tokyo Olympics.

Supercoach Luke Stedman, former world tour number 10, now lives in California and is now joining Kolohe’s team. In Luke’s opinion, what can he bring to Kolohe’s contest game?

1. Kolohe’s number one priority is to win the world title. After finishing number 5 in 2019 Kolohe now understands what it feels like to be in the title race which is far different than thinking what it’s like to be in contention to win a world title. There are always levels of understanding the landscape of the field you are competing in and Kolohe now understands what that looks and feels like and he knows if he competes at his highest level he absolutely can be world champion.

Sted’s is also notorious for bring a vibe, which has to help with life, competitive and otherwise.

2. My goal with Kolohe is to not critic or help with his technical ability as a surfer. He understands how to surf as a world champion and if you watch a regular surf at his home break at lowers or any break on the world tour then you can see quite easily that he his ability to surf at the highest of high levels. My goal is to tighten his mental, tactical, physical and spiritual areas of his surfing and life. I simply asked Kolohe to help me understand what he does in these areas and how we can do them better which will 100% not only lift his performance and make him a better persona but also help him know even more that he is a world title contender. If we set a personal best goal for each performance each day then we are going to improve dramatically.

3. Wining a WCT event. In 2019 His lowest placing result was a 9th and then three 5ths, two 3rds and two 2nd’s. An extremely consistent year as a competitor with a solid average heat score. So why couldn’t he win an event? For those who have won consecutive WCT events they know what it feels like to win. They know how to do as they have done in before. There is confidence and there is a blue print. How does one beat in the final a competitor like this? This is what we are working on and I know I have the tools that he can use to help in this area.

The building blocks for good surfing aren’t exclusively aquatic.

4. Giving back to the community that support you. It’s wild to see how much support guys like Medina and Italo have on the beaches no matter where they are competing. The energy the spectators bring to those events to support these guys has a direct correlation to how it makes those competitors feel and this is an advantage to them. Kolohe and I spoke about how he can give back to his community of supporters for the support they have given him in the past. We need to keep the good karma energy, feeling empowered and knowing that doing the right things feels awesome circling around Kolohe by giving back.

5. Being consistent. If Kolohe or any top 10 competitor is competing at the top of their game consistently for the year then they are a threat. Its the injuries or unfortunate life circumstances that play a role in disrupting the consistency and it’s easy to recognize this in high site. ITs my job to have every thing in Kolohe’s profession and person life in the best possible shape and to exercise all of those areas so they stay fit and healthy. The art of surfing is easy it’s every thing before and after that helps shape the end result.
