Gallery: A Thriving Sunday At The Byron Bay Brewery

Record stores, bumping bar lines and a whole lot of head-banging.

That’s a wrap on the second weekend of the Stab x Summer Bright’s Summer Sessions tour and from all accounts it’s the best gig yet.

We’ve had a back to back double-header, with a chill 250km road trip between drinks, dipping our heads in the balmy waters off Byron Bay to wash away the evening grime.

There was a one-foot wind swell running, which understandably got old kind of quick, so we decided to stroll by ‘Howl and Moan Records’ with The Belligerents and Alex Lahey to fondle some vinyl. We flicked between LP’s, picked a few favourites and made our way towards the Brewery.

The weatherman predicted rain squalls and gloomy skies, but not enough to deter a crowd with an appetite. In the end, the weatherman was wrong and we were dished out nothing less than Byron Bay’s best.

The aptly named Byron Bay supports, Seaside, took to the stage first up for a considerable audience, which was only a mere snippet of what was to come. Beer was sipped, dance moves turned to funk, and by the time The Belligerents took the mic, there was a healthy line of eager heads scrambling in the doors.

We’re big Belligerents fans, they share our obsession for the ocean and really know how to move in front of an audience. In fact, Harry Bryant likened the frontman’s antics with that of Midnight Oil’s Peter Garrett. Those who snuck in early enough to take in the set feasted upon a sock x jock hopping combination, filtered with a few swoon inducing mid-song interludes.

The bars continued to cram and Alex Lahey was prepping her pick-up. The lucky ones who snuck in before the full capacity cut-off were stoking on the vocal chord carnage which was about to round out the afternoon’s shenanigans; vocals courtesy of Alex herself as well as every person swarming the stage who couldn’t help but blast them back. Smart phones were raised above eyes as the digital addicts grabbed their footage, whilst the rest were too pre-occupied with head-banging and bouncing to share their lives on socials.

We’re not sure if it’s just a recency effect or whether the night really was that good, but we’re calling Byron the biggest banger thus far. The trip isn’t over yet though, we still have two more free gigs on the horizon north of the NSW border and there’s a strong chance these will take the cake with Quik Pro just around the corner.

So if your stress levels are rising or if you’re keen on an across border weekend-double then you can find us at the Cooley Hotel on Saturday and Sunshine Beach Surfy the day after, if you’re into free live tunes (who isn’t?) then we’ll see you there front and centre.
