She looked at me with an absolute smirk on her pretty face

Laura redefines what it means to be a professional surfer… Photos by Kane Skennar Laura Enever has just turned 19 years old. She knows all the words to Juicy by Notorious BIG and she lives in Narrabeen when she’s not haunting the world’s professional surfing events, although she’s not WCT rated just yet , but she will be. Kid rips. Laura has always had a little something that makes her not just cute as hell, but deeply marketable. Is it her awesomely clean, healthy lifestyle or is there a little bit of the devil inside Miss Enever? This interview took place late(ish) on a Thursday night in October, 2010. Tell me, have you ever been in love? Love’s too serious. I don’t know. I don’t what love is, yet. I still feel too young to be in love. I want to be a teenager for as long as I can and then, maybe one day… You only have one year left as a teenager! Exactly! I feel like 19 is so much of an older age than 18, and not just chronologically. It feels like another realm. How about 20, according to social commentator Lily Allen it’s all over when you’re 22. I know! I don’t want to get that old! Now, let me ask, did we make you feel beautiful at the shoot or were we cruel and exploitative? It’s funny to say but the photos make we look like a woman and they make me feel like a woman. I’ve always been such a fun little girl but then, I look at them and… whoa… Did you feel beautiful at the shot or was it a stressful event? Well, when we got there we thought it was going to be more of a fashion shoot. We had a stylist who picked out heaps of clothes but I ended up, uh, kinda not wearing clothes at all. But, it was really cool. I walked out of the shoot feeling like I’d grown up five years. It was, like, a confidence boost to know that I could feel comfortable with myself taking those types of photos. At first, I was a bit freaked out and then I got more confident; it made me more confident in my body image. I’ve never done anything quite like that and it opened my eyes. I walked out and went, whoa, what just happened? Have you ever had your heart broken, torn out and danced upon?  I’ve had boy troubles but, like, whatever. I promised myself when I was young that I’d never let a boy make me cry. Right now, I’m with Granger. Granger Larson. I’ve never really had a real boyfriend and never wanted to get that serious. I always wanted to have fun, but we decided to see how it’d go. It’s cool, right now. But, like, it’s not super serious… What does having a moderately serious boyfriend entail? A moderately serious boyfriend? Ha! Just being with ‘em and not being with anyone else. We’ve been trying to make it as chill as possible. Are you both exclusive? (laughs) I guess so. Are you going to write about this? It’s relatively new. Like, right now. I’m going to throw out the name of two of our favourite surfers in the world. Describe them physically and describe their surfing. First, the coverboy on the other side of this book, Kolohe Andino, from San Clemente, California. He’s an up-and-comer who’s pushing all the limits and blowing minds. He’s a cute boy, but, he’s pretty mean to some girls I know. His name means rascal and he’s a rascal. What about Reynolds? Hot. He’s hot. HE is hot. I love that style that he’s got going. A lot of girls are in love with him and his style. How many super-close friends do you have?  If you want a number of super close tell-any-secret –in-the-world-to friends, I would say five. What’s been the best thing a friend has ever done for you? Saved me from a drunken creep one night. None of the high-salaried men or women surfers are ugly. Is that a bad thing? Is it so wrong to be employed to sell boardshorts and bikinis? And, has your gal-next-door beauty been a thrill to your sponsor? Marketability is everything. It sucks, kinda, but it’s a market. It’s about selling. It’s sad when great surfers don’t get sponsors, though. Sexiness sells. I think about Maria Sharapova and how she was the sexiest girl in tennis. I didn’t follow tennis, but I knew Maria Sharapova because of her sexiness. She did so well for herself because she was sexy and confident and she was an amazing athlete. That’s what it comes down to.  Were you specifically warned about the Stab shoot? That we were devils? (Laughter detonates) I was! I was! I heard from Alana (Blancahrd) and Bruna (Schmitz) who you did the photo shoot with last year. They told me how they were freaked out about how you, like, tried to get them naked. I’d been warned a few times, but it’s fine, because you guys are a men’s magazine and it’s an amazing magazine. At the shoot, I was told my first couple of photos weren’t sexy enough and that I had to take some clothes off, but it ended up being really cool. If we thought the photos were degrading or didn’t suit my image, I wouldn’t agree to have ‘em run. We adore women! The shots you did of Alana and Bruna are so beautiful and they’re so sexy and I heard the photos that Steph Gilmore didn’t get run look amazing! We want to show how sexy and feminine girl’s surfing is. Stab is helping us out by running us alongside models. It’s just really cool. (Laughing) Here’s something. I was surfing P-Pass with Steph Gilmore and we were talking about how fun it would be to, and this is six-foot perfect P-Pass barrels, to take our tops off and get

Topless! But, we didn’t have the guts.

It’s cute you thought of us. Now tell me, are gals as bad as boys? Does evil lurk equally in the hearts of women as it does in men?  Yes! Some boys can be dicks and some girls can be crazy bitches. Ha! – Derek Rielly
