Watch: Who Wore It Best?

The back half of Pentacoastal as told by Danny Johnson.

Pentacoastal dropped in May, yet its relevance has persisted into the depths of 2020.

One could say this is due to a large lack of surf content as a result of stringent travel bans, but that’s simply not the case. While difficult, plenty of surfers found means to travel whilst adhering to social distancing and quarantine guidelines, taking boat trips to the Mentawais and many a Brazilian enjoying aquatic Maldivian delights

Wade and Shane’s Pentacoastal has remained relevant due to the sheer quality of their film.

The two got repeatedly skunked throughout this process, but you wouldn’t know it from the final product. The back half of the film consists of two distinct sections, which, as our Danny Johnson breaks down above, exhibit some of the most desirable conditions a surfer could bargain for. The first finds Harry, Dane, and Wade in the Mentawais surfing Macaronis in all its corduroy glory. The who-wore-it-best of backside hangers is something you’ll have to duke out in the comments. Wade’s was out of control (in the good way), but Dane’s backside power hook is one of the most refined turns in the world.

The second section finds Wade and Harry in a situation many of us know well. With firing waves and bitter weather, they make the astute decision to suit up prior to departing the house. Whether staying toasty in the car helped them surf better is up for debate, but the groomed A-frame peaks that they found on King Island are the most aesthetically ravishing barrels a surfer could draw up.

Through this process, I’ve also learned that Danny Johnson is quite good at math as he calculates exactly how gnarly Wade Goodall is. This is great because I now know both that Wade is a lot crazier than I thought and that Danny could theoretically do my taxes in 2021.

Click above to watch (or re-watch) two of the best sections of the year. Good surfing never gets old.
