Tom Myers Wins Big Wave Ride Of The Year And ‘100 Foot Wave’ Collects A Couple Emmys
A very good week for oversized lumps of water, thanks to Bill Sharp.
“I loved big waves, but I couldn’t see a pathway to making a living out of it,” said Sydney’s Tom Myers, in a recent interview we did after his back-to-back Queenscliff Bombie lifetime waves.
“There were no Nic von Rupps, Nathan Florences, and Chumbos buying sick pads with big contracts when I was coming up,” he said. “Eventually, I gave up on that dream, trained as a carpenter, joined the Fire Brigade, bought a house, and just focused on family, work, and the waves at home. Ten years on, it’s come full circle.”
In that case, the full circle he was referencing was a sponsorship by Florence, which you can read about here. Yesterday, his circle came even more full circle — when he won Men’s Ride Of The Year at the 2025 Big Wave Challenge, for the first of the two massive kegs.
“I work two jobs,” he laughed, as he accepted the award. “Not really the time to be chasing swells. So for a purple blob to pop up, to call in sick to work and just go surfing — for that to happen like this is just absolutely incredible. Thank you so much to Bill Sharp and all you legends for keeping the lights on in big wave surfing.”
Speaking of Bill Sharp and award shows, the co-producer of HBO’s 100-Foot Wave also collected a pair of Emmy’s last week — with the show winning an Emmy for Outstanding Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program and another for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series.
“What a night! Being a part of the @100footwave project for the last five years has been an extraordinary experience, especially the development of the Cortes Bank mission from a wild idea to being the backbone of Season 3,” wrote Bill. “Now having it celebrated by the entire Hollywood entertainment community at the Emmys as the Best Documentary of the Year in all of television is mind-blowing and humbling. There are way too many people to acknowledge here (I will hug you individually at the earliest opportunity), but everyone involved in that trip knows how special it was and how I feel about the Team. Thank you all, this is proof that dreams can come true!”
