Mason Ho Made A Fitting Tribute Reel From The Last Five Years Of His Uncle Derek Ho’s Radical Life
“You can see he was living life to the fullest till the very end!”
Tributes to fallen friends are difficult, but family members, especially when they loom large in the public eye, are a monumentally challenging task.
How do you summarize a life? How do you distill someone’s essence, their lifetime’s experience?
In the case of Derek Ho, the project of telling his story properly will surely take years. But over the last two weeks or so, his beloved nephew Mason, with the Ho family’s longtime friend and filmer Rory Pringle, put together an amp reel just from the last five years banging around Hawaii and Indonesia with Derek.
“Here is just a tiny glimpse into UNCLE D’s final 5 years,” says Mason. “All clips were filmed in the last 5 years. You can see he was living life to the fullest till the very end! This man was/is an INCREDIBLE Father, Brother, Uncle, Husband & Friend. Always inspiring people around him and BLOWING MINDS in the water or on land. The first ever Hawaiian World Champion. A scientist of FUN! 100% one of the Kings of Pipeline and was blown out of the barrel more than most will know. We will forever carry on your energy and passion for life and surfing.”
