Watch: Mini, Backwash-Laiden Chopes On Hawaii’s South Shore
We present stars of hit reality TV series “Backwash Fanatics”, Mason Ho and Shelly Slater.
Say what you will about boogs…
The fact is they have actively changed surfer’s scope of what is “rideable” at some of the world’s best slabs. Chopes aside, Mullaghmore, Gas Chambers, and Frontoń have all had their walls parted by those who prefer to drag their (presumably large) sacks long before surfers tested their viability. And yes, we know our prone-preferring friends have a physical advantage when it comes to riding these waves, but craft aside, there’s something objectively admirable about exploring new frontiers, specifically when they involve large swaths of bone-dry reef.
With the North Shore lying dormant, Mason and Shelly “Slater” Paishon head south to explore a heavily localized mini-slab. It’s no wonder they were the only two surfers out given the wave’s brutal backwash and tendency to suck beneath the shelf that looks eager to consume body and board. That said, even if this wave had the quality of the aforementioned spots, the likelihood of it ever reaching their recognition status would be slim. I mean, do you see the size of some of these spongers?
Dropping novelty edit after novelty edit and without the ability to chase summer swells abroad, Mason is clearly looking for any means by which he can get his heart rate up, proving yet again that boredom plus talent equals premium entertainment.
