Watch: Big Airs, Burritos, And Cold Water

The O’Neill team returns home to Santa Cruz.

Doesn’t matter where you are — on the train, in a waiting room, at your desk, or lying in bed — you’re always plugged in. The noise never stops. Thoughts, opinions, algorithms poking at you like a lab rat.

The digital quagmire has been both a friend and a viper to the surf industry. On one hand, anyone with a half-decent camera setup can toss their edit onto the same stage as the old guard. The gates of accessibility are wide open.

But with everyone ripping, and with new evidence to prove it hitting our screens daily, it’s easy to grow numb to the whole spectacle. Our brains aren’t built to handle this deluge, so when the bucket overflows, even the brilliant stuff can spill out unnoticed.

So, what do we really value in this endless stream of clips? It’s odd to suggest anything more than people doing tricks on waves. But, when there’s too much of everything, it becomes tough to care about anything.

A few days ago, the O’Neill team dropped a Behind The Strike edit, capturing the smaller moments from their recent Maybe We Take The Detour clip, shot in the brand’s birthplace, Santa Cruz.

Behind The Strike, which is mostly a compilation of Ratsa Robb and Ian Crane goofing around and buying burritos, injects a shot of character into an endless loop of people being too damn good at surfing.

For more from Crane, consider reading our interview with the stale fish fetishist, here.
