“The Longest Wave Ridden At Uluwatu In 20 Years”

Watch as Eloy Lorenzo carves the liquid mountain!

Length Of Ride and Wave Height were dropped from the WSL’s official scoring criteria decades ago, but as anyone who watches the comps can tell you, these criteria remain vital components of a wave’s overall worth.

All of which is to say Eloy Lorenzo scored a solid 9.37 on this Uluwatu bomb, despite the fact that he 1.) Got towed in and B.) Kinda barrel-dodged his way to the end of his very long ride.

At one minute and 20 seconds, locals are apparently* calling this the longest ride at Ulus in a couple decades. While we’re not entirely convinced that’s a brag-worthy feat, we found the drone clip both gorgeous and cathartic, therefore leading us to share it with you.

Oh, and speaking of gorgeous and cathartic, Ulus was not as kind to everyone as it was to Eloy – specifically those who tried to paddle…

The author of this striking image, Fran Miller, says:

Uluwatu yesterday. He paddled hard but missed a set wave at Temples. When he turned around from that attempt, a 30ft wave rose from the sea and with fear of death from now being on the inside, he threw his board and dove as deep as he could. What seemed an eternity later, his head popped up, but his board was nowhere to be seen. After diving under another ten set waves, he valiantly swam out to sea and took rest in deep water, declining the assistance of two surfers who paddled towards him before washing around with the current past the headland out of my sight. This photo is around wave five of the set, and you can see his legs in the bottom left corner to give perspective of the waves.

Can you even imagine?

*It’s in the vid description!
