Fatal Shark Attack In Northern NSW
A 60-year old surfer from Tugun lost their life to a white pointer near Kingscliff this morning.
A surfer has tragically lost their life this morning after being attacked by a shark near Kingscliff on the Northern NSW coast. The man was 60 years old from Tugun and is reported to have been surfing at Salt Beach in Casuarina. He was bitten on his left thigh by what nearby surfers have described as a 3 metre shark which was later confirmed to be a great white, according to the Department of Primary Industries.
The surfer, who has not been formally identified yet, was helped to shore by others nearby – who also reportedly fought off the shark – but died shortly after on the beach despite efforts from those who rescued him and the first responders.
Local surfer, Stuart Gonsal, told ABC News that there were several fishing boats out in the water and there was “a fair bit of action out there in terms of fish today”.
It is the first fatal shark attack in NSW this year. All beaches in the area have been closed for the next 24 hours, but the Department of Primary Industries stated there would be no attempt to capture and kill the shark as it is believed it has left the area and poses no immediate further threat.
Our thoughts are with the friends and family of the passed.
