Watch: Surfer Tries To Save A Shark* At First Point Malibu

Real, fake, dead, alive? You be the judge!

Christo! A few minutes ago, Ashton sent me a video that @brother_marshall posted on Instagram showing a young surfer, Britlyn Coleman dragging what looks to be a shark back from the shore at First Point Malibu.

The shark is in anything but a healthy state as Britlyn carries it back through the lineup. Pushing the shark under one wave, and then looking as if she duckdived the shark as the next wave came. I rewatched, zoomed in, and rewatched a few more times before things started seeming a little strange.

Firstly, as Strider pointed out in the comments, the shark’s tail fin is nowhere to be seen – although it could be submerged. And if the tail fin had been chopped off, then there’s certainly a huge lack of blood in the water.

This led to a number of viewers on the video speculating as to whether the shark is real, perhaps just dead, or some sort of elaborate hoax – although it looks too lifelike to be a dummy.

@brothers_marshall who posted the video told Stab “there’s been tons of sightings! A juvenile washed up on the inside of First Point yesterday afternoon. Our good friend and 4th generation Malibu local Britlyn Coleman didn’t flinch and jumped in with no suit. She grabbed the fucker and got water flowing through the gills and pushed back out to sea. Not sure if it made it. She’s fucking gnarly though.”

Whether the shark is real, dead, alive, whatever, it’s worthy of a Sunday discussion.
