The First Full-Scale Wavegarden Cove Is Filled But We Have Yet To See It Break

England’s newest surf pool could be open in less than a month.

In 2011, Nick Hounsfield had a vision. He wanted to create a space in the middle of England where people could come and enjoy the outdoors, soak in the rolling bucolic green hills…and get barreled.

And now, after eight years of ups and downs, The Wave development in Bristol is filling up with water and should be ready to start pumping out waves in the next few weeks.

“Last night at 5.30pm we were able to turn the taps on and deliver perfect water into our lake and in approx 10 days we can start pushing our waves,” reads an Instagram post that went up last week. “It’s taken an absolutely amazing team to get to this point from engineers, designers, ops team, construction team, ambassadors, crowd-funders, friends, family and followers. Thanks to you all. The water has arrived.”

“The big fill has begun and the weather and water continues to be perfect,” Hounsfield wrote on his Insta feed. “I can’t put into words what it’s like to see this dream come together and already the smiles on the faces this amazing feat of engineering has brought.”

Given the timing of those posts, The Wave could start testing waves as early as the end of this week. The facility utilizes Wavegarden’s Cove technology, which can reportedly pump out up to 1,000 waves an hour. For “advanced” surfers lefts and rights will be pumped out every eight to 10 seconds. The wave starts off at about six-foot and the ride lasts about 15 seconds.

This will be the first destination to use Wavegarden’s Cove technology in the Northern Hemisphere. URBN Surf in Melbourne, Australia, is also utilizing Cove tech, but are not as far along in the construction process.

In fact, Hounsfield and team are so far along that The Wave is now slated to open for investors and “early bird” members on November 8. The general public gets a crack at it starting November 18. They’re now taking bookings with some dates already sold out. A one-hour session will cost you just under $50.

We’ve yet to see what a full-scale Wavegarden Cove can do although many are being built and running into problems. It is curious why more American Wave Machine models are not being installed around the world as the Waco Pool is the only proven machine to work, bring in business, and in Texas, business is booming.

When this pool in Bristol starts pumping synthetic runners, we will let you know.
