Surprise: Indonesia fucking pumps in June.

The Point at Lagundri Bay was 11/10 for yesterday’s Round of 64 and Round of 32 of the Nias Pro, a QS5000 event for surfers in the Asia-Pacific region. The horseshoe-shaped bay at the southern end of the Sumatran island delivered solid, liquid perfection in an afternoon for the books.

Elite waves warrant elite scores, and it was only a matter of time before double-digits dropped. Kobi Clements fell out of the sky, disappeared under the lip, and got spat out with a look-back stare to claim the first perfect 10 of the event and two beng-bengs in the final heat of the Round of 64.

More candy than a Halloween outing.

Japanese surfer Joh Azuchi neared perfection in the following round, scoring 9.97 and 9.80 in his heat win. Every ensuing matchup featured at least one surfer with a final combined score of 18 points or more.

In the late afternoon, Jan Juc’s own Xavier Huxtable paddled out on a 6’6’’ — one of the longest boards in sight today — to get his tube fix and satisfy his sweet-tooth cravings.

Huxtable air-dropped into one of the biggest waves of the day, set his line, got intimate with the foamball, and came out to a pack of caddies screaming in the channel for his first 10. Needing an 8.90 to take the lead from Zane Assink, Xavier’s second 10-point ride gave him the heat win and put him in a semi-eilte class of surfers who’ve hit the perfect 20 not in a CT event (see: Gabriel Medina and Clay Marzo).

As far as we can find, this is the highest average score in a 4-man heat in WSL history. 18 points apiece, when averaged!

Nathan Monchet kept the tube fest going, posting up a 9.80 and a 9.00 en route to a win in the following heat. Taking a page from Josh Kerr’s book — the oldest competitor in the event at the age of 40 — Nathan rode a Christenson twinnie that he had thrown in his board bag “as a joke”. He claimed the board was the reason why he didn’t eat it on his best ride.

Beta-testing the 54-man heat?

The day ended with Riaru Ito posting up a fourth 10-point ride before a battalion of civilians invaded the lineup for a go of their own before sundown.

Women’s Round of 32 and Men’s Round of 16 will resume today with the live broadcast on www.worldsurfleague.com.
