Yesterday, with the wind from the south-east, anyone on the Gold Coast who surfs or likes surfing was either floating somewhere along the currently-not-so-superbank, or watching the women light up for the Roxy Pro. But, at times through the day, packs of surfers paddled out at the less pretty-looking choice of D’bah.

The paddle out in the southern corner long the breakwall made life easier than it could’ve been out there, so long as you didn’t mistime it and cut in too early (a set on the head and it was time for take two – a mistake that I ain’t above admitting I made). Though not as aesthetically-pleasing as the superbank, D’bah was getting the job done. The rights were walling up and the wind blowing into the lefts made for ramps. “Ando and (Josh) Kerr were in the centre of the bank and both were ripping,” says Ryan Miller, who shot this sequence. “The rest of the ‘CT was huddled in the corner where the waves were protected from the wind a bit more. They were all struggling over there.”
