Yesterday AM at Merewether Beach, Taj Burrow met the morning sun with the flash of his fins. Surfing against local Novocastrian Luke Egan, the current world number one banged out two waves in the eight point range, easily winning his round of 96 heat. “I’m pretty happy with those scores,” said Taj. “They felt like good turns, but I didn’t know I’d get scores that big. I’m stoked they rewarded them. The two sections I got were sick for throwing your tail out, it was pretty fun.”
And, curiously, Taj opted not to have a warm-up surf, choosing instead to watch others. “It was hard to get up for the early start,” he said. “But I woke up when I hit the water.”
