Frames: A Closer look (And A Few Frame Grabs) From Kai Neville’s New EPOHKE Film

“It’s morphed into a raw beast.”

A few days ago, Dion Agius let slip that Kai Neville is chopping a new prime cut. Kai was always going to make a new film, and with Taylor Steele’s supposed departure from the form, we expected him to take a hard go at the throne.

Although, we may have got a little ahead of ourselves.

This film is a passion project and though it’s not the follow up to Cluster we wanted, it might be just the film we need:  a no pressure, no strings attached kinda deal. A fun one where EPOHKE team can introduce their four new team members and feed the creative urges…sounds deviant.

“Dion told me you are making a full length EPOKHE film, have you decided on the name?” I probed.

“Yeah, but it’s under wraps until we unveil in Europe next month.”

Rats.

The project started while the team were on a Byron Bay trip, before it morphed into something larger. “The cool thing about EPOKHE is that it’s rider-owned, we don’t have a rule book, which can be unorthodox at times.”

Which begged the obvious question: “What’s the point of making surf films in 2017?” Do they still influence?

“Watching a one-minute clip on your phone doesn’t give you the same feeling I had sitting on the couch with my pals” Kai explained.

Stab posts web clips daily, though we’ll leap at any opportunity to roll out a full-length. “Working on original projects,  that are personal and less corporate still have their place in our industry and are still being created. I feel younger independent film makers are needed now more than ever.“ Blake Myers and Michael Cukr are two youngsters currently keeping Kai on his toes.

Then there is Taylor Steele. What did he bestow on the prodigy? “Taylor is amazing at connecting the dots in film. He’s always been on the pulse and had the recipe down. He taught me to hunt for innovative ways to create, finance and distribute surf films. The biz of it all.”

As far as the rollout plan, it’s pretty loose for now, and the edit isn’t close to done. Kai told Stab he’s been having too much fun filming and could drag this out for a while, but he set his  premiere date as the 14th of October in France.

We’ll await an invitation, and start pricing tickets for October.

See you at the champagne-popping premier.
