Convicted Drug Smuggler Joins Forces With Drag Board Co.

One of the loudest collaborations in memory.

Rarely does a collaboration resonate. Queen and David Bowie (“Under Pressure” is timeless), money and politics, Brazilians and San Clemente. These are more palpable examples.

But now there’s another that can be added to the list: Schapelle Corby and Drag Board Co. A crew that laughs in the face of surfing (and life in general) and the queen of giggle nuggets, plugging body boards together at last.

Creed McTaggart is another disciple of the boog indoctrinated by the cult of Drag.

Background, for the uninitiated: In 2005, Schapelle was convicted of smuggling a bit of jazz cabbage into Indonesia. Stuffing a lawn mowers bag worth of grass into bodyboard (boog) bags to dodge airport security. One of the most infamous uses of a boog until the great Kolohe Andino J-Bay incident of 2017.

Spoiler alert: It didn’t work. Schapelle got caught in the act and sentenced to 20 years in prison. But after some legal jargon, a mental illness claim and a five-year sentence reduction, she returned to Oz in May 2017.

A little more than two weeks ago, Stab’s designer took a break from being a tortured artist to pen a piece about bodyboarders. With a focus on what surfers can learn from their prone brethren, he reached out to Drag, who acted as dick dragger historians. (Consider this piece a follow-up.)

The Shelby C. tee, grab it while it’s hot.

Somewhere between talking about bodyboarders “fuck you” attitude and the “BFC” (Bodyboarding Financial Crisis), Drag mentioned sending a care package to Australia’s ex-convict homecoming queen. It consisted of a boog and several branded shirts. Including one tee featuring Schapelle’s mug superimposed in front of a wall of wacky tobaccy even Snoop Dogg would raise his eyebrows at.

Then on Wednesday afternoon, Schapelle shared a gif to her Instagram page. In it, the convicted drug smuggler was holding a body board and wearing a shirt by Drag Board Co. It’s either one of the greatest tongue-in-cheek posts social media has ever seen or she has a lack of self-awareness the likes of which we may never witness again. Truely a win-win situation.

“Yeah, it’s huge news,” Drag ambassador Maddog told Stab. “Truly a hand on heart moment.”

As of today, Schapelle’s gif has over 81K views and 545 comments. Since joining Instagram last May, she’s amassed over 202K followers. She only follows 106 other accounts in return, though, including @dragboardco.
