Mick Fanning’s hyper focus in the lead up to the world title showdown is everything you’d expect from the man formerly known as Eugene. Every morning he’s out cracking it at Off The Wall. The boards, the diet, the coaching support, all of the pieces are in place. He hasn’t said much more than a peep to the media as of late, but as we wait for another round of swell to pound the Banzai reef we were able to pry these words from him.

The Difference:
“It’s really different, especially in the lead up. Usually the focus on the contenders is super intense, but it doesn’t feel as full-on this year because there’s five people sharing that spotlight.”

The Experience:
“My first title year it was hard to get anything but that title and the showdown out of my head. These days I click in just before a heat and then I can zone out straight after. That reduces the stress levels and allows me to enjoy everything else that goes on around me.”

The Routine:
“I’ve been doing this a long time and I always try and keep it fresh, but my preparation isn’t really too different. It’s tried and tested and I stick with it.”

The Boards:
“I’ve been working with the same shapers for so long in Hawaii including Darren Handley and Wade Tokoro. I have so much trust in the designs we’ve refined over the years. I’ve got a great looking quiver from DHD this season, that includes a bunch of step-ups and medium sized guns with thruster and quad-fin setups.”

The Momentum:
“It was great to get that winning feeling back. I kind of lost it through Europe. It also felt so good to get a win in Hawaii. I’ve had a bunch of finals, but to break through at such a prestigious event was a good feeling. Hopefully I can keep the ball rolling.”

The Vibe:
“So good. Just like last year we’re able to leave the title talk and rivalry at the door with our shoes and enjoy hanging out. I’m sure those big moments on finals day will become a little more intense, but it’s nothing we haven’t been through before.”
