News has just broken (outta nowhere!) that this year there will be a World Tour event back at J-Bay.

Throw your hands up, everybody. That endless corduroy running down the point, with all your favourite surfers front and centre, is once again a reality. J-Bay, we love you and we’ve missed you.

Hats off to ASP and ZoSea and whoever else had a hand in pulling off the best delivery to professional surfing since, well, Samsung came along to push it into the new age. Now we have a spanking new tech sponsor for the whole tour, and one of the best righthand pointbreaks in the world back on the books.

While the contest has been locked in to run, Billabong’s inclusion in the event has not been confirmed.

Coinciding with this excellent little announcement, is the thoroughly unexciting news that Bali is off the World Tour calendar and there will be no event at Keramas this year. You win some, you lose some…

One person who’s thrilled with the decision to have a World Tour event back in South Africa is the J-Bay Open Of Surfing event coordinator, and the director of the J-Bay Winterfest, Koffie Jacobs.

“This event, the J-Bay Open Of Surfing, came about through the hard work of the JBU surf club, as well as the local community,” says Koffie. “The event was set to run as a Surfing South Africa 5A event, and we’re grateful and excited with the fact that ASP are back on board to make it a WCT event again. We’re also excited about having the surfing tournament as the anchor event of the J-Bay Winterfest and are looking forward to hosting the world’s best surfers in one of the world’s best waves again.”

A few days ago, Taj Burrow said that J-Bay should be on the schedule “forever,” while Jordy Smith called it “one of the best point breaks in the whole world.” Kelly Slater describes it as “simply a classic wave that everyone loves going to.”

I guess we’re all really, very excited. – Craig Jarvis
