The Drop Podcast: Should The WSL Ban Airs?
And why fear and surfing shouldn’t be without one another.
On the first day of competition at J-Bay, Yago Dora landed a 9.27 for a rather monster backside air rev.
Another Instagram D-Day occurred on Instagram.
In the bunkers, angry commenters maintained that WSL surfers must remain on the face, etching railwork poetry on classic, J-Bay lines. Scoring a 9 for one air is, as they argue, unacceptable.
On the landing craft came Instagrammers who defended the scoring and were on board with off-wave surfing at J-Bay. It seemed, by skimming the comments, that the majority of blue-check mark pros were on this side.
Kolohe Andino had an especially poignant charge.
“I love this score. The judges have to be aware of where they are pushing the sport and what they are telling the youth. Is it wave selection and big sections? Or someone actually pushing the limits of what you can do on a surfboard. I choose the latter. Yago on fire. I’m a big fan.”
Take a listen to Mikey and Buck’s take on the situation on the pod.
