A haiku is a Japanese poem of seventeen syllables, in three lines of five, seven, and five, traditionally evoking images of the natural world.

The entirety of the Sano parking lot converged on Fairfax last night to sip beers, sup sushi, and watch the debut of Karina Rozunko and Vans Surf’s latest experimental visual offering, Haiku

“Strap your seatbelt to your brain” – Haiku, as introduced by Alex Knost.

A symbolically-cut, 17-minute film inspired by the ancient Japanese 5-7-5 poetry form, the film exhibited a vibrant ensemble of spoken word overtures, abstract vignettes, and high-energy surfing by Karina herself along with Alex Knost, Holly Wawn, Lola Mignot, Noah Collins, and Tanner Rozunko. “Strap your seatbelt to your brain” and watch, above.

Top-notch merch from Karina Rozunko’s Vans Surf collection and tunes by DJ Jungle Jungle.
Good sushi, good sips, and great vibes packed the cafe patio.
No shortage of style at one of the angel city’s oldest theaters.

Packed into the small, once-silent movie theater in LA’s culture-rich Fairfax district, fans of Rozunko were taken on a poetic journey from Bali to Mexico, Sumatra to Japan, and into the often untapped recesses of the right brain, where creative, out-of-the-box thinking resides.

Wawny and Knosty – co-stars in crime.
Live vibes, courtesy Karina and indie jazz outfit, Monde UFO.
Quite the lineup (L-R): Jimmy Jazz James, Tanner Rozunko, Elijah Berle, Noah Collins, Kobe Hughes, and more.

Live scoring and spoken word poetry by Monde UFO and Karina (respectively), added yet another layer of bespoke interest to the night’s events, as did elegant bites from Culver City’s sustainable sushi outfit, Fiish.

The co-creators, Jimmy Jazz and Rini, and their packed house.

The film ‘Haiku’ now – is available to watch – watch it and enjoy.

(Yes, that was a haiku.)
