A Yacht Just Ran Aground At One Of Hawaii’s Most Sacred Surf Spots

Yesterday on Maui, an Oahu-based yacht ran aground at the top of Honolua Bay, risking oil spills and damage to the delicate reef.

The boat is reported to be the Nakoa, operated by Oahu’s Noelani Yacht Charters, which according to their instagram, is “Hawaii’s largest luxury yacht. Specializing in ocean adventures, events, and ultimate relaxation!”

Honolua Bay is one of the most idyllic waves in the world, a wind-groomed right synonymous with the counter-culture and design explosion of the late-1960s and 1970s and, more recently, with women’s World Champions.

“The Nakoa (@noelaniyachtcharters) is from Oʻahu and just started operating in Maui maybe 5-6 weeks ago. They were warned about overnight mooring at Honolua Bay which is not allowed at a Marine Wildlife Conservation and Preservation.

If anyone has evidence, we are getting reports that fuel is already leaking from this vessel, which won’t be removed until Wednesday.

The community demands this company be held fully accountable. This is totally unacceptable. The Save Honolua Coalition has tried for years to have the State control boat usage of the bay. We hope that this tragic incident highlights the importance of the issue. For now we pray that DOCARE and the salvage company act quickly and effectively so that the damage be minimized.”
