The Foam Behind Julian Wilson’s Famed Wayward Sessions

From Keramas Oops, to Cloudbreak mastery.

While the first months of our current year haven’t played to the competitive aspirations of Julian Wilson, without a jersey he remains top five material. One need only rewind a few months to the day twelve minutes and fifty-three seconds of Jules fell into our feeds. So impressive were those Fijian – Indonesian – Sunshine Coast performances, that to this day Wayward maintains its position at the top of the 2017 edit pile. Recognising the organic talents of the regular-footed newlywed, when foam provider, JS, revealed the dims behind the starring craft, Stab thought it worthy of exploration.

It was a rounded pin 5’11” Forget Me Not silhouette that Jules had under his soles during those marvellous opening 16mm Cloudbreak images. While most would reach for the rhino chaser (or motor over to an XXM option), Jules’ preferred shape ran a touch shorter than his standard length, replacing lost volume through added thickness. At Keramas he rolled in familiar territory. Those aerial jams? THAT oop? All thanks to his signature 6’0″ Air 17 (on display below). By the time the final act commences, he’s back on Sunshine Coast home turf. Conditions are mortal; wonky, yet-punchy, sand-bottom material, the kind that requires buoyancy and quick starts off the mark. Once again Mr Wilson rolls with his Air 17, however a slight variation of such. It’s a whole inch shorter, but built with JS’s vibrant HYFI tech, keeping him zippy through soft sections.

Jules is 6’0″ / 80kg, and paired all of these boards with his signature template from FCS, in large.
