In 2018, it’s never been easier to walk into a store, browse the racks, and pick a stick direct from the shelf – all within a number of minutes. The majority of core stores carry the full range of big name brands, all adorned with a glisteningly high price tag, accompanied by a vaguely educated employee ready to take your coin.

As Nick points out though, there’s no shaper-surfer relationship in that scenario.

Sure, customs may take a little longer. You also can’t tell the bros that how psyched you are to grab the same board as Dane. But there’s no feeling like going to your local shaper, who might know the waves you surf, and will quickly get a sense for how well you’re going to surf them.  

In this brief clip, Nick runs through his shaping processes, starting off as a small-timer, even throwing some shade on the monotonous, all-white colourways which flood the line-ups of today.
