There is indeed something in the water in San Clemente. It’s called Lower Trestles.

For decades, San Clemente kids have mercilessly guzzled the fountain of youth that is SoCal’s most approachable A-frame. The cobblestone point keeps them young at heart, and more importantly, at their joints and bones as they spin and whirl over the train tracks.

The great thing about playing in the Lowers kiddie pool is that with enough patience and practice, odds are you’ll acquire a skillset that turns heads at any rippable wave around the world. Just look at what Lowers fundamentals have done for Kolohe Andino and Griffin Colapinto on the global stage.

Kade Matson is one of the latest and best examples of how consistently the Lowers factory pumps out tour stalwarts and freesurfing freaks. A close friend of the Colapinto bros, Kade has dissected the siblings’ approach in the air and on rail and applied his own special sauce. Here we see the 20-year-old stylishly dismantle Keramas and Uluwatu courtesy of years of rail work on the train tracks.

Much like the Amtrack that hugs the famed coast, San Clemente talent chugs along elsewhere but has a habit of returning to the home base, often in better shape than it left. So expect Kade’s time abroad to only benefit him the next time he pulls up to Lowers.
