Photolyfe 2.0: Quinn Matthews

Quinn originally comes from Idaho. And, he might’ve been a professional soccer player, were it not for the curse of injury. Bad for him, good for us: Surfing needs this particular brand of invigorated lens work. Nowadays you’ll usually find Quinn on a beach in France, Australia or the great state o’ California, pointing his lens at the world’s finest. “Currently, I’m really excited about documenting the more personal scenes,” says Quinn of his craft. “So the main thing is trying to approach surfing with the same view. I’ve only been doing this a few years but when I look back at my archives, I most enjoy portraits, and lifestyle photos I’ve taken. With action photos and the way surfing is progressing, there’ll always be another session with better waves, bigger airs, deeper tubes. But the moments leading up to those sessions won’t happen again. But, I do love shooting performance surfing. I’ll still be out swimming and shooting until both my legs cramp up if the waves are good. Water photography is way more rewarding than shooting from the land, in my opinion. It doesn’t take too much thought to compose a scene from land but in the water there are so many more variables.”
