There’s a noticeable difference in his tone.

It’s more relaxed. more concise. Each word that comes out of his mouth seems to have a lot of meaning behind it. This isn’t Any CT Surfer we knew in the past.

We’re eating breakfast at a small cafe in Manly Beach. Well, I’m eating breakfast – he’s sipping a smoothie. After a 2016 that consisted of a couple highlights and a few heats that just didn’t go his way, Any CT Surfer decided to make some big changes in the offseason.

So, we talked about that. And you can jump in on our conversation right here. And you should jump in on our conversation right here – it’ll leave you feeling like 2017 might be Any CT Surfer’s year.

Stab: How’d the offseason treat you?
ANY CT SURFER: Yeah, it was good. To be honest with you, last year was a bit hectic for me internally. I had a few good results here and there, but I found that I was stressing too much and not taking any time to enjoy myself. In the offseason, it was so good to finally just relax. For the first time in forever, I feel like my batteries are completely recharged.

Yeah? Feeling good now?
LITERALLY ANY CT SURFER ON TOUR RIGHT NOW: Feeling awesome. So clear. Honestly, these past few years, I feel like I lost touch with why I even started surfing. I’ve reconnected with that now though, so I’m feeling really relaxed and really intense. I’m going to have a lot of fun this year, but work real hard, but also have a ton of fun and work super hard.

So, were you mixing any training in or just cruising?
SERIOUSLY, ANY ONE OF THE SURFERS RANKED 1-32 IN THE WORLD: Actually, I trained a lot. There’s a guy from my hometown who runs a gym and he put me on a crazy program. He almost qualified for the Olympics in paragliding once, so he’s got some really interesting theories about body mechanics, liver hydration, stuff like that. After working with him, I really feel like I have an edge.

Have you changed anything up with your equipment?
EVEN IAN GOUVEIA (YEAH, HE’S ON TOUR): Yeah, my boards are feeling super dialled. I worked with my shaper to sort of add some rocker but also make them a bit flatter. They’re feeling mental.

So what’s the goal for this year?
ANY FUCKING CT SURFER: My only goal is to feel good surf my best. I have a few things set in my head internally, but all I can really say right now is that if I end the year feeling like I surfed 100% in every heat, I’ll be happy.
