Dane Reynolds Has A New Wetsuit
Business up front, zipper in the back.
Sequels can be a tricky business. They’re forever destined to be compared to the original while striving to be something better. Oftentimes they fall short.
But if we apply the sequel theory to wetsuits, I think we can all agree that newer is better. Better tech, better design. And if we’ve learned anything about Dane Reynolds over the course of his career, it’s that the man knows how to follow his previous act. (See: Everything he’s done after the tour, Chapter 11 TV and merch.)
This brings us to the DR2, Buell’s follow-up to Dane’s first signature suit, the DR1.
As with all his work, Dane’s fingerprints are all over this no-frills hunk of neoprene. One major difference with round two is that, in classic Dane style, it bucks the conventional trend by throwing it back: It’s a back zip. Makes for easier entries/exits during those chilly Emma Wood mornings. The signature “B!” logo is also designed by Ventura’s most creative surfer himself. It’s got the usual minimal logos and added larger panels. Get yours in 4/3mm or 3/2mm.
“I wanted the DR2 to be a back zip just because it’s a timeless design that I don’t think will ever go out of style,” says Dane. “Easy to use, easy to get in, easy to get out, it’s comfortable. I wanted bigger panels and less seams, because if you think about it, that is more flexibility and less chance for leakage. It’s really a simple and effective wetsuit that keeps you warm and out there longer.”
From unorthodox shortboards to video parts to career trajectories, Dane’s long been a trendsetter. But can he single-handedly bring back the back zips to lineups near you?
