Oscar Langburne wanted this clip to be character revealing. “I didn’t want it to be just another surf clip. I wanted to show who I am as a person.”

Oscar is not your average eighteen year old. He’s already carved out a career for himself as a freesurfer riding for brands like Former started by Dane Reynolds and Craig Anderson, and now, Pat Tenore’s RVCA. His deals have come because of, and not in spite of, his unconventional style and opinion on issues that many argue are out of school.

“For years growing up, I copped shit from other kids for painting my nails and listening to 80’s music. My dad raised me on that music, and I’ve always had a natural interest in the graphics and art that I’ve put on my boards. It’s funny now seeing those same kids now doing the same. Dying their hair, riding alternative shapes, listening to punk music, painting their nails, the rest of it,” says Oscar.

“There’s shitty parts of surf culture that are so ingrained that we don’t even think about them. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve been called a poof by some macho hero for having long hair or riding different shapes. But it’s those same people who have a couple of beers and get their dicks out and slap each other on the ass, which is pretty strange considering how anti-gay they are” laughs Oscar. “I’ll take being called a ‘poofta’ as a compliment. It takes way more bravery to be a gay person than having to prove your masculinity all the time”.

Oscar premiered ‘Glosoli’ last Sunday in Newcastle at The Family Pub. “We had a really great turn out, and the nice thing was that 95% of the things people said to me after were about what I said and not just about the surfing.” They also raised a truckload of cash that will be donated to the Gromnation charity based in Siargao offering at-risk kids long-term mentorship programs.

The great thing about surfing is that when the waves get critical, you lose a lot of the bullshit. You lose the people trying to look the part, forcing soul-arches on tinted-resin dogs, and get to see how someone composes themselves when there’s genuine risk at stake. Oscar composes himself just fine in these dicey South Australian slabs, where many of his macho detractors would be tucking their tails and running for the hills.

Osc is a realist not unfamiliar with copping hate from anonymous internet trolls. At the end of the day, he’s proud to put together a clip with music he likes, featuring people within his circle who inspire him, and doing so in the service of raising money for a good cause. “Look, if people like it, that’s cool but if they don’t, fucken whatever really.”
