A Different Kind Of Surf Photo Exhibition
Kane Skennar and Mark Vassallo’s, “My Shadow and I”
If you’re a Stab regular, you’ll be familiar with the name of fashion photog, Kane Skennar. Kane has shot everyone from Julian Wilson, well before he was linked to Ashley Osborne, including Ash, Laura Enever and perennial Stab darling, Sage Erickson. He’s the fashion photog who surfs. As a surfer, he incorporates the ocean into his fashion work, as showcased below with the newest Gudang, Ms Hanalei Reponty.
“The surfer as Batman is Harry Henderson, who lives in Byron and rides a lot of finless creations,” Kane continues. “I needed someone who surfed well and could look the part. It wasn’t an easy outfit to surf, paddle or stay afloat in,” he says over email. “It’s an attempt to bring out the dark mystery of the ocean, why not use the Dark Knight? And if we’re reaching for parallels, Bruce Wayne wasn’t born Batman, he possesses no super powers, through struggle, determination and vendetta became Batman. In the same sense that we aren’t born surfers, but any of us know, that there is something supernatural about gliding down a wave’s face. It takes effort to improve and those seconds when it all comes together it’s the closest thing freedom; it’s what brings us back for more. The images also feature Soli Bailey and Josie Pendergast.”
“Mark Vassallo and I wanted to create images that depicted what superheroes are because everyone as a kid wanted to be one as an adult,” says Kane. “It’s a dark look at surfing, because to most surfing is very bright and colourful. Adding the superhero gave it an iconic and timeless feel.”
The exhibition shows until March 17 at MCM House, 180 Campbell Parade, Bondi.
