California’s Central/Northern Coast Has Every Wave Type Imaginable
Seven well ridden, very different faces.
From San Luis Obispo north of the Golden Gate California’s coastline morphs into beach breaks, points, slabs, oh and don’t forget Mavs lies between. Here’s a glimpse of Kyle Buthman and Perry Gershkow’s new film Vertical Lines, which if you’re up in the San Luis Obispo area is set to premier June 2nd. On central/northern coast there’s empty breaks to score (you just got to know where to look), white’s to fear and the air permeates a lush fragrance that’s notably green. The third wave in this clip, featuring Austin Ford-Smith, is on one of those days that if you live in San Francisco’s Sunset District you dream about. Apart from how social and surf media molds the masses, Ocean Beach is the coast’s most unforgiving. Usually blown out, always overhead, and you never seem to be in the right spot… On it’s day however, it rivals Blacks as the best beach break in the Golden State. “This day was one of those days that depicts El Niño at Ocean Beach,” Perry tells Stab. “Ten foot faces, offshore winds and peaks up and down the beach. Austin snagged a few this day that were some of the best we’ve ever seen out there.”
Mavericks had a questionable season, as did most of the Central/Northern coast. As El Niño brought clean conditions to Southern California, it brought wind and weather up north of Point Conception. “There weren’t many good Mavs days this year,” says Mr Gershkow, “but this day was arguably the best ever. It got really offshore around noon and the Maui guys really stood out for those couple of hours. Watch this wave breath in before it spits Kai Lenny out!”
Also featuring, in order of appearance: Noah Wegrich, Nicholas Hdez, Nate Tyler and Nat Young.
