Waiting period extended for Quiksilver Pro, Gold Coast

It was kinda inevitable. Conditions throughout out the Quiksilver Pro, Gold Coast waiting period have been entirely unfavourable to Snapper Rocks. Round one of competition was completed, but although there’s been a lot going on around the corner at D’bah, Snapper’s since rarely been bigger than a boat wake. And with another lay day called this morning, the announcement was also made that the waiting period would be extended from Wednesday, March 11 to Friday, March 13. “After a lot of discussion with the athletes, our on-site staff, our executive team in Los Angeles, our event partners and the local government, we have extended the competition window two days to take advantage of a swell system moving in,” said Commish Kieren Perrow. “The WSL is the world’s best surfers in the world’s best waves and the extension is an illustration of our commitment to that philosophy. It’s a significant financial, personnel and energy expenditure for the league, but we’re passionate about the world’s best surfing and we’re excited to see what this swell brings.” A significant financial expenditure that, if the rumours are true, could be up to $100k. And how about all the flights that’ll have to be cancelled and all the accommodation that’ll have to be found. But that’s all insignificant if Kiz’s educated gamble comes off and we get to see the event completed in waves that’ll be, perhaps not quite Cyclone Marcia quality, but potentially incredible and certainly better than the previous week.
