Stab Podcast: Who’s Going To Win Olympic Bronze?

Kanoa, Kolohe, Carlos Muñoz?

Judging by the forecast, Olympic surfing should begin in about five hours (if you want to know how to watch in your country, click here).

Whether the Olympics will actually change the global perception of surfing, or alter these surfers’ lives in some meaningful way, is yet to be seen. What I do know is that if we really want eyeballs, we need to pray for some sort of mid-event shark encounter. No injuries or deaths of course, just a playful brushing like Fanning at J-Bay.

The real question is, who’s going to win? Luckily for you, we have the answer. Well, half an answer. A Brazilian will win gold, and likely silver, but bronze is still up for grabs. Will it be the “local” boy Kanoa Igarashi? The Indonesian firecracker, Rio Waida? Will Kolohe Andino flex his small(ish) wave skills for a podium finish? Or will Carlos Muñoz fly in last-second, win his first heat in a pair of jorts, and proceed to decimate the field?

I, for one, hope it’s the latter.

The female side of the draw is much more open to interpretation. Carissa Moore is the favorite on paper, but Caroline Marks screams Olympic star. Sally Fitz could overcome a career of bridesmaidery with one win here, and finally steal that Weetabix deal from Steph. Lest we forget Silvana Lima, who has a fire that burns deep and a frontside rev that rivals the boys’.

Listen to our latest Stab CUSP ep for a full breakdown of the event, featuring an interview with Team USA and Team Australia head coaches Brett Simpson and Bede Durbidge. Plus a bonus section about Kirra’s localism situation.
