One privilege World Champions are graced with within the WSL is the ability to take a year off from the tour. In 2020, Carissa Moore, the 4x World Champion and 2019 CT victor will be exercising this right.

At only 27 tears old, Carissa has been on the World Tour since 2010, winning titles in 2011, 2013, 2015, and 2019. Although surfing for a living may seem like a well-paid of life of leisure, at times it can be a grind. Ten stops on the tour, innumerable flights, and both internal and external pressures to perform. This is part of the reason Carissa will be taking a year off in 2020 to rejuvenate and regain some of the passion which has resulted in her winning four titles over a 10-year period.

In the latest episode of WSL’s podcast, The Lineup, with Dave Prodan, she detailed her exact reasons for this decision and the though processes behind it. She will still be competing in the Olympics in Japan in July next year, and working on a film project while freesurfing, so it isn’t as if we won’t be seeing much of her or her surfing.

With Carissa taking a year off, Amuro Tsuzuki, the 18-year old from Japan will be joining the tour. The second Japanese surfer to qualify for the tour after Kanoa Igarashi transitioned from USA to Japan a couple of years ago. Amuro was also the first Japense woman to win a QS tournament this year taking out the ABANCA Galicia Classic Surf Pro back in September.

For more details on Carissa’s decision to take a year off, scroll back up top and give the podcast a listen.
