Miguel Pupo, Nat Young and gal pal, Nat’s house, Santa Cruz

Nat Young is an accommodating man. Staying at his house in Santa Cruz during the O’Neill Cold Water Classic was Mitch Crews, Balaram Stack, Michael Dunphy, Sage Erickson and Jesse Mendez. Nat lost in the quarters of the event, but still hosted the after-party. In attendance was Dusty Payne, Granger Larsen, Kai Barger, Shrimpy, Jesse Mendez, Mike Dunphy and a few others. “Of course, where there’s pro surfers, there’s also groupies,” said James ‘Jimmicane’ Wilson. “A number of attractive girls came to hang out with Miguel and Nat, two of Santa Cruz’s most high profile people.” After the party, everyone went to a Mickey Avalon concert. The spoils of victory, yes?

Miguel Pupo on an Alfred Hitchcock set, Portugal

There were hundreds of them… Just now, not fifteen minutes ago… at the beach… the birds didn’t attack until the men were in the water… crows, I think… Oh, I don’t know, is there a difference between crows and blackbirds?… I think these were crows, hundreds of them… Yes, they attacked the men. Attacked them! We kid! Portugal ain’t usually an eerie place, but this photo looks like a set from Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, in which Bodega Bay is overrun with suddenly-violent birds. In the moment you see above, Miguel Pupo was warming up at Peniche, just before Rip Curl Pro organisers called a lay day. While the Brazilian spins over the shorepound, beneath a swarm of ravens, a swell builds and heads for the Supertubos banks (which are excellent right now, by the way). So, the call wasn’t a bad one. When the event does fire up, it’ll be the heat draw below that’ll unfold with gusto and excitement. Miguel Pupo and all that glitters, Off The Wall, Hawaii

“The masses have arrived on the North Shore,” says Ryan Miller from Hawaii. He ain’t wrong. Been watching the social media light up? The stretch is alive! “With the first hint of waves this morning, all the team houses facing the stretch of Pipe, Backdoor and Off The Wall slowly started to empty towards the sand.” And that ain’t all that’s blown in. “Oh, yeah, and the wind has arrived as well,” continues Ryan. “The kind of wind that regular-footers dread and the kind that makes goofys rub their hands together. It was blowing strong today. This is Miguel Pupo, the goofy, punting one in front of the Rip Curl house at Off The Wall. Pretty sure this guy surfed three different times before lunch. What a pleasure it is to live 100 meters from the waves.” Isn’t it just? A treat afforded to so few of us. But, don’t you love the way Miggie’s spray dances in the trade wind!
