Scenes From Our “Culture Shifters” Premiere At House Beer In Venice
With Morgan Collett of Saturdays NYC and endless carbonated refreshments.
It’s long been acceptable to kickstart your weekend on Thursday night. Last evening, at the House Beer HQ in Venice was no exception.
The almost-Friday crew came out. The scene was quaint. We indulged on pizza, pasta and salad courtesy of Dagwoods. We sipped on malt-based refreshments courtesy of House Beer and eventually shuffled in for our screening of the fifth episode of “Culture Shifters” starring Morgan Collett of Saturdays NYC.
These premieres aren’t your typical surf film showing. The crowd is small. We bring everyone in the room, we shut the music off, dim the lights and roll the short. We produce “Culture Shifters” in association with House Beer. It is a series that showcases individuals within our community who have helped shift the status quo in some form.
The documentaries aren’t filled with rip clips (most feature only a few ridden waves). Instead, the contents are of the culturally ravenous nature. Following the short film, we do a quick Q&A with the subject. It’s like a beer assisted Ted Talk with a party attached.
Here’s a quick rundown of our past episodes:
We started this series with Scott Trattner, former creative director of Facebook and the gentlemen who brought you the classic Mac vs PC commercials. We did an episode on Dion Agius, one of surfing’s most original thinkers – the film had nothing to do with Dion’s surfing and everything to do with his entrepreneurial pursuits (Dion is the only professional surfer featured in this series so far). The third installment was VICE’s Jake Burghart, the man behind the camera of VICE’s most noted pieces from North Korea, The White House with Obama, The Democratic Republic of Congo and beyond. Episode four starred Foster Huntington, the man who inadvertently started the #vanlife craze. He now lives in a tree house in Washington and runs a production company called Movie Mountain. We’d urge you to revisit the above links if you’re searching for inspiration.
Saturdays NYC is one of the first brands to put surf, coffee and fashion culture all in one space. Since their launch in 2009, their shop has become the archetype for many you see popping up today. To read more about our trip to NYC and watch the doco click here.
For now, we’ll let the photo gallery of last night’s festivities do the talking.

Beer tends to make everything better.

Crushed.
