Photolyfe: Derek Dunfee
When a big wave surfer doubles as a lensman!
Welcome back to PhotoLyfe, in which Stab’s favourite photographers answer questions about themselves with their own images. It’s that old picture-tells-a-thousand-words chestnut but with more colour and pop. It’s a way to cut out all the bullshit. It’s like jacking into the main vein of those who supply us with exquisite surf imagery every day. Give thanks by studying each image with a more careful eye than ever!
Derek Dunfee’s a big wave charger from San Diego. He hit us up yesterday about his photo exhibition DEKKA 3, the third zine he’s put out. “DEKKA 1 and 2 covered 10 years of big wave photography, from about 2004-2014,” Derek told Stab. “I travelled everywhere for those zines: Mavericks, Oregon, Todos Santos, Cortes Bank, Maui and Oahu, Puerto Escondido, Tahiti, South Africa and Ireland. DEKKA 3 covers the past three years of my big wave travels”
If you’re in the San Diego area tomorrow, Derek’s having a show in Leucadia at the TFR Gallery 1026 N HWY 101 Leucadia CA, 92024. The doors open at 6 PM. Feel free to wander in.
