Mr Kyousuke Karube is a Japanese hair stylist and proprietor of the Hair California store in Shonan, Kanagawa. Last year, he visited California to surf, cut hair, and make a film about his travels called Cutback to California. He stayed in a van for two weeks, shredded and cut hair (even Joel Tudor got cleaned up). Rincon was the best wave he’d surfed in his life. As a follow up, he visited Australia and made a sequel called Cutback to Australia. The premise is the same. He visited Noosa, he cut hair and he did a whole lot of time in the ocean. Now, this is a polarising piece. There are no air reverses. There are few shortboards. But, let’s appreciate, can we please, the A Simple Life-influenced intro and warm soundtrack, if nothing else.
