Core Moments Of Stab: The Swimming Pool, Malaysia, 2004
As determined by surf throwback enthusiast, @surfcore2001.
Welcome back to a completely impromptu and semi-meaningless celebration of the past, hosted by an Instagram personality Stab digs: @surfcore2001. With an accredited degree in early 2000’s surf history (we’ll fact-check that later), Mr Core’s account is a highly recommended follow. A go to click if your digital appetites can only be satisfied by boards over 6’2″, ‘nooners’, shin-skimming shorts, swollen-tongued Osiris kicks and oil rigged shades.
Self-described as “Hi Performance internet content for the Y2K surfing enthusiast,” his posts are nostalgic with a tongue-in-cheek twist. After successive daily double taps we fired the account’s mastermind a loose brief: Send us Stab’s most core moments of yesteryear.
We’ve already shared episode one from our collaborative series, here’s part two:
The Swimming Pool, Issue 3, 2004
Thirteen years ago Stab invited Taj Burrow, Joel Parkinson (world #3 and #4 at the time) and Trent Munro, to shoot at the Sunway Lagoon Wavepool in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Test rides revealed paddling into the park’s limp creation wouldn’t produce the results they were looking for. Negotiations were made with management and ski assistance was approved. Complications continued to compound while the team countered with genius workarounds. Taj attacked the end section with reverses, passion pops and various grabs, Parko attached a foot strap and linked with silk while Trent planted the back foot gouging apart the opening opportunity. Two days and one hundred and forty waves later they had what they needed. A bank of still and motion imagery that has since achieved cult status.
“@surfcore2001 presents Core Moments in Stab History: The Swimming Pool.
Nothing gets SurfCore more revved up than three dads whipping each other in a hot tub @tajamos, @joelparko and @trentmunro engaged in some heavy frolicking, poolside in KL. Back in the days when wavepools were tiled, chlorinated and modelled on a Floridian QS stop. Nevertheless, these three corelords performed some bladder-weakening man-turns. Coming home with nothing but mid-shin boardshort rash, a home-loan size mini bar tab and some seriously iconic imagery. I mean!?! Look at knacker’s power turn!! That’s got me more ridgid than a Carbon Fibre MC Tow Board. @billmorris #theswimmingpool #threedadsinahottub #strapped #chlorinatedcorelords #coreinKL #knackers #stifferthanaTCblackline #fairbits #dutyfree #coremomentsinasussmag #tribaleldersofthecore”
