Dane Reynolds Ripping a New Campbell Brothers/Channel Islands Bonzer

And a few minutes in the shaping bay with Central California board building royalty!

A few weeks ago, a clip slipped into our inbox, a single wave of Dane Reynolds pushing a new Channel Islands / Campbell Brothers Bonzer collaboration, the Bonzer 3d.

While we’ve enjoyed the bite and drive of some Bonzers in our day, what Dane was doing on the futuristic three-fin was like nothing we’d seen done on the design, save for the a few of Captain Arc, Taylor Knox’s powerful swoops on the design he’s evangelized for decades.

That afternoon, we paddled out at small Backdoor, picked off a few runners from the pre-teens and the invalids braving the two-foot slabs, before watching Conner Coffin go absolutely berserk on what looked like the very same board we’d watched Dane blitz, amping up for that very session.

Conner was kind enough to let us kick the board’s tires—a stubby little 5’7, wide- and diamond-tailed, belonging to Channel Islands team manager, Nathaniel Curren.

“It’s too small for me, I think,” Conner admitted, Nathaniel being at least 15lbs smaller than the stocky, leadfoot. “But the thing feels insane.”

According to CI, Dane, Malcolm Campbell, and Britt Merrick “got in the shaping room with a raw blank to design and hand shape a board for Dane with blended elements from the 70’s and current period.  The result is a step-down that is fun, quick, and spicy in average surf.  The modern hybrid outline, low rocker and wide arc tail create lift while the long base of the Bonzer 3 side fin provide timeless speed and projection.  Comes standard with the Bonzer bottom contours airbrushed, and all necessary fins.  Designed to be ridden your same height or shorter.”

The board’s apparently only available for a limited time, though we hope it’ll get enough attention to warrant a place in the 2018 CI lineup.

You can check out the Bonzer 3d’s sexed-up bottom contours below:
