Chas Smith’s Family Values in the NY Times
Chas Smith, man of the pen (or keyboard), often writes for Stab and often writes for Surfing. And sometimes, he writes for other publications like the New York Times. Or more accurately, the Times’ Style Magazine, in which he’s just had a feature published on Astrodeck and its owners, the Fletcher family. Astrodeck is the only remaining family-owned surf business, according to the Fletchers. Pops Herbie, wife Didi, sons Nathan and Christian and Christian’s pup Greyson are surfing’s Adams Family, and they like it that way. Tight-knit, purist, imperfect, punk. Chas hung out at the Astrodeck factory, watched Christian and his son skate the park, asked questions, listened. It’s a good read, and different to what you’ve probs come to expect from Chas. Get over there and dig on it for yourself, and be sure to watch the doozy of a clip that accompanies the piece.
