Now, concept surfboard art is a thing that hovers with much tentativeness on the edge of game and lame. But we’re very partial to this Alexander Wang x Haydenshapes collection. Designed for a cage installation in Al’s Soho flagship (103 Grand St, New York), the five boards were created exclusively by Haydenshapes and feature photos of unique marble slabs printed digitally onto silk, then onto the boards.
The board models are all Haydenshapes’s award-winning Hypto Krypto, each handshaped by Hayden Cox personally for the project. The marble art was co-developed by Wang and Haydenshapes, with the whole installation idea being to develop a high-end surfboard as a piece of art for the Cage (but keeping it performance-based which, if you’ve ever seen Craig Ando on one of these at Desert Point, the Hypto really fucking is). The boards are suspended from the cage wall with a monolithic, large black wave sculpted from black sand occupying the surrounding space.
