A Light Afternoon Of Permanent Marker And White Paper At The RVCA House
I am he as you are me.
RVCA has slowly and absolutely made themselves a namesake on the North Shore. Their home (or homes) sit on the path between Backdoor and Off The Wall. They occupy a considerable slice of Hawaiian real estate each year with a pair of large, two-story four-ish bedroom homes sharing a lawn. On any given day, their house is a potpourri gathering of talent of all sorts – from photographers to artists, filmmakers to chefs, enforcers to groms, that dirty term ‘legends’ to the virtually unknown. It feels cliche to note their slogan, but a “balance of opposites” rings true and has put the R-V-C-A in bright lights. The vibe is golden, and when Pipeline and Backdoor are doing their it thing, half the team is rolling in off the second reef while the rest sit on the porch and hoot and holler. It’s a spectacle of the finest form, and in the often exclusive nature of the North Shore, the RVCA house is as inviting as any sitting on the seven-mile…. with that said, don’t show up uninvited.
A few days back, we spent the majority of the day dodging sun and rain squalls on their lawn while shooting our portrait series with photographer Zak Bush. The concept is simple: a few different colored Sharpies and the slogan “I am a _____” written beneath. A loose prompt that was destined to go off script. As the likes of Bruce Irons, Herbie Fletcher, Kevin Ancell, Luke Davis, Danny Fuller, Jay Davies, Ford Archbold, Tyler Newton, Ricardo Christie and more hung out on the property, between anything but ruly Pipeline sessions, we wrangled them for a couple quick portraits.
Nothing cerebral here, just some grown men and the occasional confused statement about just what the fuck they are in permanent marker.
