11 Ways To Define A Good Life

Through the eyes of Mitch Crews.

There’s very few outright dickhead pro surfers.

It’s almost disappointing because tearing shreds off people can be a lot of fun. You ask your friend that’s been in the recent presence of someone notable “What’s he/she like?” and it’s almost always a boring answer of ‘legend’, ‘biggest lord’, ‘such a king/queen’.

The surf world is unfortunately made up of friendly, genuine and extremely likeable characters. And then there’s Mitch Crews. Mitch takes this likeability to such an extreme it’s safe to guess he’d have upwards of 800 people that think they’re his best friend. You know the drill, no ego, listens, ferocious surfer, funny and talented, all the attributes you want around for a good time unless you live to hate, in which case you’re screwed.

Anyone who’s shaken the hand of the good looking man with the last name Crews and the hair cut of a young Tom Cruise will agree that Mitch might be one Australia’s nicest fellas. Mitch has spent the COVID season buzzing around his home zone of the Gold Coast while working on a number of projects and surfing his brains out. We partnered up with eyewear brand OTIS out of West Oz to catch up with Mitch and find out a little more about what makes him tick with a multimedia interview.

Favourite song at the moment?
I heard this song while I was sitting at a cafe in New York last year and thought jeeze this is a nice tune so I shazamed it. I never get sick of listening to it, it always puts a smile on my dial and goes well with an arvo tin.

Funniest clip on the net?
I saw this on the Brown Cardigan Instagram the other day and it really made me lol.

Earliest surf photo of yourself?
This was just before my first ever surf comp when I was like 12 or 13, it was at Joneses beach on the South Coast NSW Australia. I had Owen Wright in my heat, I got 4th place.

Favourite shot of yourself surfing?
Without a doubt this one! From STABMAG ISSUE 89 snapped by Andrew Sheild. There was no better feeling  back in the day then opening up a surf mag and seeing a pic of yourself in there!

Draw a self portrait?
That’s as close as I can get, I even included a Rockstar can so you can tell that it’s me.

Favourite pair of OTIS shades?
Been enjoying the OMAR lately.

How many boards are in your garage?
This many.

Most treasured surf craft?
This ACSOD TWO FANGS, shaped by my brother. It works from 1ft to 6ft and I’ve absolutely never had a shit surf on it

Car you would buy if you had infinite cash?
No brainer really, it would be the Delorean from back to the future. If I couldn’t pull that, it’d just a really good Toyota Land Cruiser.

Your house is on fire, what do you grab as you run out the door?
My lappy so I could salvage photo/video memories and important documents and shit. Everything else I’d be cool for it to go up in flames.

Favourite surf clip on YouTube?
The YouTube algorithm is always spitting surf clips into my face and when this one pops up I watch it every time. So sick how Creed, Beau, Duncan and Toby just bought a Land Cruiser and fucking drove it across Oz. Full bucket list thing for me. Not to mention surfing is awesome.
