Conner Coffin’s New EP Is Pure Dad Rock Gold!
Like tossing quarters in the old man’s favorite dive bar jukebox!
Good artists copy; great artists steal, the old saying goes.
It’s no secret Santa Barbara’s Conner Coffin’s act is an homage—nay, pastiche—of Dane, Bobby, Curren…
And like Curren, did you know Conner was a musical virtuoso? A technical guitar wiz? A proper crooner?
Well, the 24-year-old has just released his freshman effort, a six-song EP comprising roots covers of some of our parent’s favorites.
The album features Conner on guitar and vocals, accompanied by full band and guest musicians, all doing their best versions of The Rolling Stones 1971 heartbreaker, “Dead Flowers,” off Sticky Fingers, John Prine’s masterful “Angel From Montgomery,” as well as “Ooh La La,” by…
No, wait… that can’t be right.
What we meant was “Ooh La La” by Rod Stewart’s first band, The Faces.
Also on the record: “The Weight,” from Levon Helm and The Band, “Knockin On Heaven’s Door,” in a style somewhere between Dylan and Rose, and both our mother’s and ex-girlfriend’s favorite song of all time, Fleetwood Mac’s, “Gold Dust Woman.”
We’ll be the first to admit our surprise with the album, fully aware that Conner knew his way around a Telecaster and Twin Reverb, but no clue he had the chops to pull off the Dad Rock record of the year.
Will we soon see surprise performances in competition-adjacent dive bars the world over? First round’s on us!
