We Should All Aspire To Dane Reynolds’ Backside Bottom Turn
Even if we’ll never get close.
Dane Reynolds is a master of all things surfing. This much we can agree on. But if you had to pick one aspect of the sport in which he particularly excels, what would it be?
Carves? Maybe.
Tubes? Not exactly.
Backside finner? Perhaps.
Airs? Once upon a time.
The ‘Dane Turn’? Of course, but too obvious.
…What about the backside bottom turn? It’s not a particularly flashy maneuver, nor one that elicits any significant number from judging panels the world over. But the way that Dane cuts through the transition and into the lip is unmatched by any of his contemporaries. It could be argued that no one other than Occy has ever even rivaled him in this category.
In the above clip, around the 3:30 mark, we see Dane lay one over into a debilitating backhand snap. It made our hair stand up more than any air, finner, or tube in recent memory. Which just goes to show: it’s not what you do on a wave, it’s how you do it.
The rest of the video, a Pentacoastal B-side featuring Wade G, Harry B, and Dylan is also supremely enjoyable. But we can’t stop thinking about that bottom turn.
