Watch: Not Even 5-Mil Rubber Will Protect You Out Here
Gearóid Mcdaid’s Irish Roller Coaster ride.
Scientists have long speculated on how temperature differences affect cognitive functioning. In simpler terms, some PhD holders suspect that warmer weather might make for dumber humans.
While hordes still insist on unlearning basic human behavior while getting their intake of almond-shaped tubes in equatorial archipelagos, a noteworthy portion of surfing’s elite have been showing growing interest in the cavernous waves of the Emerald Isle.
Gearóid Mcdaid, the goof from Sligo, is well aware of the rising interest in Ireland’s rugged Atlantic coast: “The guys that come for those big heavy days are usually super chill and nice. Once they show respect, the locals make sure they get their waves.”

In recent years, surfers like Russell Bierke, Harry Bryant, Nate Florence, Noah Lane, Mikey Wright, and more have put up some of their best performances in the region, turning what was once a novelty surf destination into a heavy water proving ground.
Gearóid is nothing but grateful for their presence in his local lineups. “There are more each year. It’s pushing us in heavier waves. Everyone who travels here says Ireland is their favorite place — not just for the waves, but for the banter in the water. It really doesn’t compare to anywhere else.”
His new edit, Roller Coaster, is a collaborative effort with his best friend Clem McInerney. The title reflects the ups and downs Gearóid has faced over the past few years, particularly with injuries. “Life’s been a bit of a roller coaster. One swell, I’m getting the waves of my life, and the next, I’m injured.”

Now fully recovered from what Gearóid hopes is his last injury “for a while,” McInerney’s edit showcases what spending last winter at home was like.
Not wanting to jinx the man, it seems like simply coming out unscathed from a session at some of Ireland’s most infamous submerged shelves is a goal in and of itself.
