Watch: John Florence’s First Surf As A Dad
Featuring some crisp insights on surfing backside and riding fiberglass fins.
Last week, we began exploring the quiet trend that’s begun occurring under the back feet of the world’s best surfers — fiberglass fins.
“Fiberglass feels the most like surfing,” said Britt Merrick. “Fiberglass is in our DNA as surfers, it’s what we’ve known since 1955. Everything we’ve made has been constructed of fiberglass. I think it feels the most natural, the most connected, and the flex pattern makes the most sense. Younger surfers are finally feeling something they haven’t felt in a while. It feels like it ties everything together.”
Above, John Florence tests these theorems, pitting some TechFlex fins against their fiberglass counterparts, both in his signature templates.
“First dad surf — I’m tired,” he says, before belting a handful of aquamarine sections and offering some backside surfing advice.
